Stanley Whitney: The Italian Paintings

The first time that Stanley Whitney’s works that have been created in Italy have been presented. Spanning from early works to pivotal years he spent in Rome, to paintings made during subsequent summers spent in his studio in Palma throughout the last three decades. The exhibition includes a number of the artist’s sketchbooks and paintings which display his exploration of the formal possibilities of colour within ever-shifting grids of multi-hued blocks and over gestural fields and absorption of Roman art and architecture. Italy and Italian art and architecture has continuously had a profound influence on his work.
