The Next Earth. Computation, Crisis, Cosmology
Merging planetary computation with climate-centered architecture, the exhibition challenges visitors to reconsider humanity’s environmental impact and technological future.
Bringing together two major research initiatives—”Planetary Sapience” by Antikythera and “Climate Work: Un/Worlding the Planet” from MIT’s Department of Architecture—this exhibition addresses urgent questions about the future of our planet and the role of architecture in shaping it.
Spread across two floors, “The Next Earth” adopts Antikythera’s research to examine Earth as an evolving megastructure through historical artifacts and immersive installations. At the same time, it showcases forty visionary projects from MIT’s School of Architecture, each presenting a miniature world that reimagines sustainable design practices.
Between the cosmic reality of our planet and the ways in which we construct our understanding of it, the exhibition fosters a dynamic conversation about the current ecological moment and the futures we must begin to imagine. By juxtaposing and synthesising planetary computation and climate-conscious architectural practice, it challenges the viewer to rethink the scale and span of human action in relation to Earth’s systems.
