Wales in Venice: James Richards
James Richards represents Cymru yn Fenis Wales in Venice at the 57th Venice Biennale. The solo show consists of a new, large scale, site responsive sound installation and a suite of additional works containing overlapping archival samples and musical extracts repeated or reworked into different forms.
Richards main interest lies in the possibility of the private in the chaotic mass media world. In his works the artist combines video, sound and still images to create installations and live events. His starting points are the fragments of cinema, works by other artists, stray camcorder footage, murky late night TV that constitute his personal video bank. By mixing these different elements the artist creates works of great intensity like the one on view in Venice.
The exhibition is curated by Hannah Firth, Director of Visual Art, Chapter, Cardiff. Chapter is a multiform art space in Cardiff, Wales dedicated international art, performance and film production and presentation.
