NEWT Miami: Experiments in Light, Color & Sound (NEWT) is a public art installation in Downtown Miami. Inspired by Isaac Newton’s theory that every primary color correlates to a musical note, NEWT will transform the 19-story LED wall of the InterContinental hotel (100 Chopin Plaza) into a digital canvas for performative architecture. Visible from lookout points throughout the city, audiences are invited to experience rapid-motion animations of color, shapes, and light alongside synchronized musical composition, accessible via mobile and web-enabled technology.
Creatives Dejha Carrington and Kelly Nunes conceived of NEWT in rethinking Miami’s rapidly evolving skyline as a public space. Screening every night from November 10 – 15, 2015, in tandem with collaborative events, themed talks, and accompanying pop-ups, this independent initiative is using a light in the sky to spark a participatory art experiment. “We wanted to create something that adopted a building’s existing architecture, features, or identity as a plot twist in our artistic narrative,” said Carrington, NEWT co-creator. “The InterContinental Miami’s facade became our canvas: not only because of its unique arc in Miami’s story, but as a modern-day lighthouse—a beacon of sorts—that stands out in the city’s skyline.”
Join us for the grand premiere of NEWT at 6:30 PM with a live performance by the sublime Nu Deco Ensemble orchestra, playing in synchronicity with the building, at the Tina Hills Pavilion. The performance is followed by a private reception at 7:30pm at the InterContinental Miami hotel, featuring a special apple cocktail crafted by Bombay Sapphire for the occasion.
Admission is free.
