Rituals Of Commemoration: Reclaiming Through Art And Action, A Weird Miami Bus Tour By Rosa Naday Garmendia
RITUALS OF COMMEMORATION: RECLAIMING THROUGH ART & ACTION is part of BFI’s Knight Art Challenge winning programming WEIRD MIAMI. BFI invites artists to create tours and exhibitions that reflect their relationship with the city.
The project and bus tour “Ritual of Commemoration” includes public performances about violence towards people of color. This tour stems from the need to address urgent social and political issues concerning acts of racism, poverty, the militarization of police and mass incarceration. Through this union of arts with activism, we want to critically and thoughtfully engage the public on matters regarding social justice. The driving impulse is to honor those we have lost to police brutality with the goal of ensuring they are not forgotten.
This tour will serve as as an act of mourning, making meaningful connections and building understanding while maintaining a sense of connection with those whom we have lost, a new action to the time-honored rituals of devotion and commemoration. This tour will have multiple on the ground stops in Miami-Dade County, with site-specific public performances.
