Launch of ZUM #9

Av. Paulista, 509

The latest edition of ZUM, the magazine of Instituto Moreira Salles will be release on October 30th at Martins Fontes book store, with a talk between photographer Lucia Mindlin Loeb and USP professor and art critic Agnaldo Farias mediated by journalist Mauricio Puls. The guests will discuss art and urbanism after the work “Avenida Celso Garcia” [Celso Garcia Avenue], created by Lucia for the issue: she photographed the avenue, located in São Paulo’s north zone, in 2004 and 2014, creating panoramas that narrate the changes suffered by the city.

ZUM #9 also presents photographs by anthropologist Eduardo Viveiros de Castro exclusively edited by artist Miguel Rio Branco. The images were captured in the early 1980s during an ethnographical research of the Araweté indigenous people, with whom Viveiros de Castro spent eleven months.

Photos by George Love (1937-1995), who lived in Brazil between the 1960s and 80s and was part of the photojournalism team of Realidade magazine, are also presented in the edition, as is an essay by award winning journalist Dorrit Harazim about Mexican photographer Graciela Iturbide, with famous images, such as the series she developed with women from Juchitán between 1979 and 1989.

An analysis about artist’s Ai Weiwei relation with internet, written by curator Urs Stahel; an interview with Lucien Hervé (1910-2007) to curator Hans Ulrich Obrist; an essay by professor David Levi Strauss about photographic manipulation in famous political cases; and a text by Noben winning author Saul Bellow (1915-2005) are also featured in the magazine. Finally, the last work developed by Italian Ugo Mulas (1928-1973), the series “Verifications”, is fully presented in the issue.
