The Venice Glass Week 2020

Founded in 2017, The Venice Glass Week is the international festival dedicated to the art of glass by the city of Venice. The initiative aims to promote and support this craft skill, deeply embedded in the city’s DNA for over a thousand years, which has its principal and internationally-renown headquarter in the island of Murano.

The 2020 edition of the festival takes place from September 5 – 13, 2020, under the title #TheHeartOfGlass: this year, the special focus of the programme will be on the “making” of the glass. Following the success of the 2019 edition with more than 200 events in 100 different venues, #TheHeartOfGlass features a varied programme on and offline events, talks, exhibitions, workshops, and activities, spread throughout the city. In this way, the festival will try to relaunch the glass sector – primarily that of Murano – after the lockdown caused by the Covid-19.

Among the new initiatives, Conversations on Glass by Apice is a programme of six digital talks about the world of glass involving national and international speakers, which will be streamed on The Venice Glass Week YouTube channel. Moreover, a series of guided itineraries will also be part of the programme for the first time: The Venice Glass Week Tours by Nexa will make visitors discover the world of glass, with visits to selected furnaces, workshops, and ateliers in Venice and Murano.

In the end, families and children are the recipients of the Kids’ Programme by Artsystem, a series of educational events and guided itineraries to discover the programme of #TheHeartOfGlass.

During the week, two prizes will be also awarded: the Bonhams Prize for The Venice Glass Week, assigned to the best project in the festival; and the Autonoma Residency Prize, at the first edition, awarded to an artist or designer working in artistic glass, between the ages of 18-35.

The festival is promoted by the Town Council of Venice, and organised by Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia, LE STANZE DEL VETRO – Fondazione Giorgio Cini, Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti and Consorzio Promovetro Murano.
