Taking its title from Soviet terminology to describe a ‘house of culture’ – DK is an abbreviation of the Russian “dom kultury” – DK ZATTERE reflects the kind of activities that made these cultural hubs so popular in 1920s Russia.
Often equipped with art galleries, theatres, workshops, libraries, cinema and concert halls as well as locally run radio stations, DK’s were recreational centres set up for and developed by the locals, offering them a place to go and practice their hobbies.
Just like a “dom kultury”, DK ‘Zattere’ is a multi-functional programme featuring an experimental performance area on the ground floor, artist films and a dedicated Cine Club on the first floor, with a small library and reading room, workshop and co-working rooms overlooking the Grand Canal. Visitors will also have access to an architecture model and details about V-A-C’s future home, the historic GES-2 power station in Moscow, redesigned by Renzo Piano Building Workshop and currently under construction.
Multi-disciplinary artist Mark Fell has taken over the second floor of the palazzo with a new site-specific installation, turning it into an immersive, sonic environment, which will include a large space for yoga and mindfulness practices.
