Les Rencontres d’Arles
The 53rd Rencontres Internationales de la Photographie will take place in Arles from 4 July to 25 September 2022.
Every summer since 1970, over the course of more than forty exhibitions at various of the city’s exceptional heritage sites, the Rencontres d’Arles has been a major influence in dissiminating the best of world photography and playing the role of a springboard for photographic and contemporary creative talents.
The 53rd edition of the Rencontres d’Arles is all about revelations, the talent of emerging photographers and artists, first through performances and new experiments, and then through images that we would not necessarily want to see. By revisiting, exploring or illuminating, the Rencontres reaffirm their commitment to defending photography and photographers in their role as explorers and resisters in the face of the world’s great issues. After two years, the festival returns to its usual format for the opening week and its evenings.
For this new edition, the fair offer a sharp and serious programme, open to distant horizons and struggles of all kinds, from women’s struggles to the demands of Indian communities and the environment. Through these exhibitions, discover the raw images of the feminists of the 1970s, photos of a fragile and fantasized nature seen by Noémie Goudal, or Julien Lombardi’s original dive into the sacred land of the Mapuche Indians in Mexico.
The festival aims to stay abreast of changes in the photographic image and new processes and technologies, and to offer everyone a chance to get to know the world of photography. It is rich in diverse viewpoints thanks to the number and variety of photographers and curators from different backgrounds.
