Anne Imhof: Wish You Were Gay
Kunsthaus Bregenz presents “Wish You Were Gay”, a comprehensive exhibition by Anne Imhof spanning all four floors of KUB. This exhibition not only serves as a personal survey but also introduces a fresh body of work that builds upon Anne Imhof’s established repertoire of artistic expression.
“Wish You Were Gay” encompasses a diverse array of artistic mediums including bas-reliefs, large-scale oil paintings, sculptures, stage elements, stadium lighting, and new video works crafted from archival footage. These elements collectively reflect Imhof’s evolution as an artist emerging from underground subcultures.
Throughout the exhibition, Anne Imhof delves into profound themes such as finitude, reality, and artifice, juxtaposed against a backdrop of post-apocalyptic isolation. Despite the absence of a live performance piece, the exhibition invites visitors into an immersive experience where an imagined narrative unfolds, complete with its protagonists and the physical movement integral to Imhof’s practice.
Indeed, movement and performance are central to everything Imhof undertakes, transforming the exhibition space into a dynamic stage where the boundaries between art and audience blur, and where themes of absence and presence resonate deeply within the viewer’s experience.
