A century of portraits
Portraits from the 20th century are the spotlight of this group exhibition. A portrait as a stylistic medium can represent the person it is picturing in many different ways, literally representing or only symbolically referring to the personality of the displayed person. The show outlines various perspectives and media used within portraiture, as for example photography, which had become the most accessible and popular mode to portrait someone by the turn of the 20th century.
Further, paintings, sculptures, drawings, gelatin silver prints, prints and bronzes by more than twenty artists are presented, including works by Berenice Abbott and Dora Maar, by James Brown and Arnold Newman. Among the pieces on display, treasures such as the portrait of Man Ray by Carl Van Vechten dated 1934 are being shown.
