Billi Thanner: The I and the It – Freud’s couch revisted
Billi Thanner, a Vienna based female artist, refers to her hometown´s icon, the famous founder of the psychoanalysis, Siegmund Freud, who was chased by the Nazis and emigrated to London in 1933.
Thanner works with the idea of self-analysis when using those central terms from Freud’s theories: The I, the It (and the superego). As an artist she works with the secrets of gender-relations, not exactly queer, but rather sincere. It has become her trademark to produce an imagery that comes along in the fashion of commercial advertising for everyday products, which after all slowly develops its subversive impact.
