Gruppe Rot-Blau / Serge Brignoni / Jürg Kreienbühl | Basel
The exhibition brings together the works of important Swiss artists.
The Gruppe Rot-Blau was an artistic movement founded in Basel in 1924 by Albert Müller, Hermann Scherer and Paul Camenisch. The group was inspired by German Expressionism, especially Die Brücke, and developed an intense style of painting characterised by strong colours and simplified forms, often connected to Alpine life, nature and criticism of bourgeois society.
Serge Brignoni (1903–2002) was a painter and sculptor associated with the European avant-garde. After periods spent in Paris, he came into contact with Surrealism, Cubism and African art, all of which deeply influenced his artistic language. His works combine primitive forms, symbolism and modern experimentation, making him a central figure in twentieth-century Swiss art.
Jürg Kreienbühl (1932–2007) was a Swiss artist known for his social and urban realism. He lived for many years in France and depicted suburbs, rubbish dumps, shanty towns and industrial landscapes with remarkable precision and human sensitivity. His paintings document the hidden aspects of modernity and highlight the marginalisation produced by contemporary society.
