¡Hola Prado! Two Collections in Dialogue
In summer 2015 the Kunstmuseum Basel lent ten Picasso paintings to the Museo Nacional del Prado in Madrid, where they were seen by around 1.4 million visitors. This year, the Prado is repaying the favour by sending twenty-six master works dating from between the late fifteenth century and the close of the eighteenth century on a journey to Basel.
The show presents a dialogue between the Kunstmuseum’s own collection and the lent works – a summit between two centuries: master pieces by Titian, Zurbarán, Velázquez, Murillo, and Goya are contrasted with works by Memling, Baldung, Holbein the Younger, Goltzius, and Rembrandt. In total, fifty-four works are presented in this old-master’s show, and thereby shedding light on similar features as well as differences in techniques, subjects and moral beliefs throughout centuries and great artists.
