Max Beckmann
The exhibition provides a comprehensive overview of the career of German artist Max Beckmann, widely regarded as one of the most important painters of the 20th century. Beckmann established a unique position in art history through a figurative language of extraordinary psychological depth, resisting categorization within established movements such as Expressionism and New Objectivity.
Beckmann’s work was profoundly shaped by his experience of living through two World Wars, culminating in his emigration to the United States in 1947. His oeuvre bears witness to the psychological intensity and moral fractures of the inter-war period. Spanning the entirety of his career, the exhibition brings together brooding social allegories alongside luminous landscapes and portraits. These works collectively reveal a recurring tension between personal intimacy and the broader brutality of the 20th century.
