Modern & Tribal Masters
For its sixth iteration Modern & Tribal Masters, a Pop-up exhibition, will be held in the rooms of Angela Berney Fine Arts at the Muensterplatz in Basel.
This annual event, in conjunction with Art Basel, brings together major works of art from the modern and contemporary classical scene of the West with masterpieces of tribal art from Oceania and the Arctic Circle.
In this week-long temporary exhibition, the galleries will display side-by-side and in dialogue artworks by major artists such as Max Ernst, Henri Hayden, Henri Matisse, Ugo Rondinone, Victor Vasarely, Not Vital and others, as well as a pair of unique masks from New Guinea, a collection of ancient lithic objects, including early American stones and bird axes, a rare ceremonial panel from New Ireland, an important tusk figure from Gabon, and a masterpiece of medieval art, a 16th century alabaster relief from Nottingham depicting the Annunciation.
The exhibition emphasises the interconnection between tribal art and artists, collectors and dealers.
