Ode an die Sphären

In his installations and sculptures, Kerksieck constantly seeks new and demanding spatial developments. His sculptures grow from the ground and enter into a dialog with the environment and the viewer. The process- and creational orientation is omnipresent in all of Kerksieck’s work. The origin of his pieces tend to be the nearest hardware store, do-it-yourself (DIY) is at the core of his work; slightly obliquely cut pieces frequently reassembled in new combinations, overlapping edges, and found objects create new and unfamiliar interlockings. A ‘build-your-own’-utopia is the result, where the individual works unfold and create an architectural landscape.

Kerksieck deals with issues such as identity and existence in urban environments. His sculptural and installational pieces are the result of utopian and (retro) futuristic architecture and film sets; a peculiar double life between model and real spatial interior pieces. Aesthetically speaking, his work is characterized by a growing form of linguistically complex cubic interlockings and nestings within their surrounding spaces. These three-dimensional objects are not without narrative qualities, which are up to the viewer to expose and explore. In Ode an die Sphären the works can be considered hybrids between architecture, model, furniture and the everyday object.

Kerksieck aims to question the sculptural process and its inherent fallacy. His works are greatly influenced through his interest in organic structures, social and architectural elements, and science fiction, as well as selected extracts from contemporary popular culture. The outcome often resembles poorly assembled home improvement projects. This is of course in the spirit of the artist, who strives to provide alternative and democratic processes – thus bringing the utopian architectural approach to the foreground in the works.
