Oriental Grand Tour
A selection of 19th-century photographies witnessing the increasing taste for cultural tourism in the Middle East
The exhibition gathers a selection of photographs from the Ruth and Peter Herzog collection, concurrently with the two large displays “THE INCREDIBLE WORLD OF PHOTOGRAPHY. The Ruth and Peter Herzog collection” at the Kunstmuseum Basel and the exhibition “MIDDLE AGES AND MODERNITY. Photographs from the Ruth and Peter Herzog collection” at the Historisches Museum Basel.
“Oriental Grand Tour. Photographs from the Ruth and Peter Herzog collection” focuses on 19th-century orientalist photography: during those years, a new form of tourism by wealthy Europeans took hold, directed towards all the Middle East and further enhanced by the photographic technology, at the time still relatively young. The pictures on view highlight the main destinations of these tours.
