Sonja Sekula: mon amour
Galerie Hilt hosts a solo show by Swiss artist Sonja Sekula (1918-1963).
She is considered a sensitive, profound and virtuoso artist, whose short, exciting and dramatic life has been characterized by a mixture of different languages (German, French, English), nationalities (Swiss, American and Hungarian) and a flowing religious identity (Catholic, Jewish and Buddhist).
Sekula’s work concerns words and images. She combines the graphic and the linguistic, the figurative and the non-representational in a very unique, innovative way, which is expressed in her linguistic poetry and idiosyncratic word images.
She was exposed to strong influences (the “éctriture automatique” of the surrealists, the abstract hieroglyphic imagery of Paul Klee, form and color designs of the abstract expressionists) that emerge in a wide variety of stylistic elements.
