Suzanne Lacy: By Your Own Hand
This exhibition presents “De tu puño y letra” (“By Your Own Hand”) (2014, 2015/2019), a powerful video installation by Suzanne Lacy, a pioneering figure in feminist and activist performance art. The work explores the theme of gender-based violence, highlighting how violence and death affect individuals differently depending on gender, wealth, and race.
Although such violence is widespread, only in recent years has it begun to receive broader recognition from politicians and society. Lacy’s installation brings these issues into public focus, continuing her decades-long commitment to social justice and advocacy for marginalised groups.
Based in Los Angeles, Lacy has been at the forefront of Social Practice since the early 1970s, developing participatory works in collaboration with local communities. Her art gives voice to individuals who identify as women and directly challenges the patriarchal structures underpinning gender-based violence. This exhibition invites viewers to reflect on these injustices and engage with the urgent conversations Lacy’s work provokes.
