Till Velten: Mirrors, Chains, Transitions

The German artist Till Velten does usually ask questions. He is seeking for histories of places and personal stories of people. His plastic medium is the language, predominantly used in the form of interviews and documented as videos, installations and publications. By replacing images with words, he creates documentary recordings of encounters that represent portraits and sketches of the world. Even though the active part is left to the interviewee, Velten can be considered the “sculptor“ of these conversations, since his questions serve to make them deal with themselves and to transform inner life into art. In so doing however, he doesn’t remain untouched, as all face to face conversation does necessarily come along with the recognition of one’s self.
