Christian Fogarolli: Pneuma at STATE Studio
Winner of the Italian Council project (2019), Fogarolli's work is an attempt to bring to light the entire spectrum of subjectivity behind diagnoses of mental illness, which otherwise risks remaining untold.
The exhibition “Pneuma” by Christian Fogarolli at STATE Studio Berlin is part of the namesake broader project. This investigates the immateriality and intangibility of mental illness, along with the stigmatization often associated with it. Incidentally, the project rediscovers itself in dialogue with the current worldwide emergency caused by the rampant COVID-19 epidemic, questioning the psychological impact of these traumatic events and isolation on the individual.
After year-long research on the field in several European institutions dedicated to the study and care of mental pathologies, Fogarolli created an exhibition path composed by environmental installations made of different materials, including glass sculptures, a video piece and photographic works created in collaboration with brain research institutes such as the University of Trento (Centro Mente Cervello CIMeC) and King’s College in London.
After Berlin, the project will be presented at MARe Museum in Bucharest, Schwarzescafé at Löwenbräukunst in Zürich and at MAMbo – Museo d’Arte Moderna di Bologna, which will acquire the final works in its permanent collections.
The exhibition can be experienced online or through the museum’s social channels, due to restriction for COVID-19.
“Pneuma” by Christian Fogarolli is a project supported by the Italian Council (6th Edition 2019) program to promote Italian contemporary art in the world by the Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity of the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism.
