Goodbye, Mr. Chaplin

EAM Collection, Sybelstrasse 62

The exhibition Goodbye, Mr. Chaplin highlights the real historical origins of the Internationale Situationniste, which played an important role in connection with the Paris May Revolution of 1968.

“The Soulèvement de la Jeunesse” (“The Uprising of Youth”) was a guiding idea of the founder of Lettrism, Isidore Isou. But three of his fellow campaigners, the early Lettrists Guy Debord, Gil J. Wolman, and Jean-Louis Brau, turned away from their authoritarian but hesitant mentor in 1952 and founded the International Lettriste (IL). This radical movement, led by Guy Debord, pioneered the Internationale Situationniste  (IS), which emerged in 1957 from the merge of the International Lettriste with avant-garde movements by Asger Jorn and Giuseppe Pinot Gallizio.
