Passing Data: Upcycling the Digital
A significant portion of data stored in the cloud is no longer in use, turning into digital waste that drains energy and resources. In these vast, inactive quantities, data loses its relevance and becomes obsolete. Upcycling offers a way to give this neglected data a second life, transforming discarded information into something new and unexpected.
To explore this concept, six artists were invited to experiment with upcycling as a speculative method for reusing old data. They searched through outdated files on their computers, cloud servers, and hard drives. In pairs, the artists swapped images, fonts, videos, sounds, or code, integrating them into their creative processes. These elements became part of ongoing projects, found new contexts, or served as inspiration for fresh ideas.
The artworks created for this online exhibition examine digital waste and its impact on the environment. They generate new visuals that highlight the hidden materials of the internet and explore thoughtful digital coexistence. The exhibition focuses on shaping a digital environment that is inclusive and sustainable for today and the future.
