Vaginal Davis: Fabelhaftes Produkt

Gropius Bau marks 20 years since artist, writer, and performer Vaginal Davis made Berlin her home with her first major solo exhibition in Germany. Blending punk with glamour, queer activism with Black counterculture, and resistance with desire, “Vaginal Davis: Fabelhaftes Produkt” showcases her expansive practice.

Spanning 1985 to 2025, the exhibition features seven large-scale installations, including painting, video, film, zines, writing, music, and performance. It highlights her collaborations, such as Choose Mutation with Berlin’s CHEAP art collective and photographer Annette Frick, as well as projects with New York artist Jonathan Berger.

Davis herself is a living artwork—performer, writer, zine creator, visual artist, filmmaker, “Blacktress”, drag terrorist, socialite, and educator. Since the late 1970s, she has pushed artistic boundaries, inspired by the Black Panthers and naming herself after activist Angela Davis. This exhibition reinterprets her archive, linking her radical practice to urgent contemporary issues.
