Giorgio Andreotta Calò: Icarus
Shot in December 2020 inside a long-abandoned butterfly pavilion at Emmen Zoo (Netherlands), shortly before its demolition, the film moves between reality and fiction. It documents a moth colony reintroduced by the artist and follows entomologist Enzo Moretto and young autodidact Bart Coppens. Through their mentor-student relationship and the moths’ metamorphosis—drawn to electric light in darkness—the myth of Daedalus and Icarus is poetically evoked.
“Icarus” is shown in an unused structure soon to be dismantled, echoing its origin. The space is turned into a large aviary, where dozens of moth cocoons installed by Andreotta Calò complete their transformation during the screening days.
Visitors can also view Ericailcane’s mural, partly visible for some time above the garden wall. Created specifically for Palazzo Bentivoglio, the 8-metre work spans five wall panels and will be accompanied by a publication currently in progress.
