Jason Hendrik Hansma: In Our Real Life (Waves)
The distinction between nature and city dissolves. Rivers invade basements, the wind knocks out windows, fire burns doors. The earth dances, and perhaps the Garisenda Tower collapses. Closed places are frightening.
For Art City Bologna 2025, Alchemilla presents “In Our Real Life (Waves)” by Jason Hendrik Hansma. The artist collects videos of storms from around the world: Saint Malo in France, Koh Lanta in Thailand, Montevideo in Uruguay, and over 50 other locations. These are assembled in a montage that presents the individual catastrophic events as manifestations of a single anomalous wave. The soundtrack by Kelman Duran amplifies the hypnotic effect on the viewer as the sea absorbs the architecture.
This event marks the first of Climatica, a programme curated by Gabriele Tosi for Alchemilla in collaboration with Toast Project. Hosted in the 18th-century rooms of Palazzo Vizzani, in the heart of Bologna, Climatica showcases artistic practices that explore emotional and physical connections between the private interior spaces and the collective dimension of the external environment.
