Jason Schmidt: Artists
For the past two decades Jason Schmidt has pursued an ambitious project, photographing over 500 of the leading international contemporary artists at work in their studios and during the installation of their work.
APALAZZOGALLERY features 23 of Jason Schmidt’s artist portraits, dating from 2001 to 2017. A wide range of artists are included from established figures such as John Baldessari and Maurizio Cattelan to emerging artists like Ryan Trecartin and Servane Mary. Like photographers of previous generations, known for their artist portraits such as Man Ray, Hans Namuth and Ugo Mulas, Schmidt’s photographs are more than just portraits. They provide remarkable insights to how the artists approach their work and the creative process. Each of the 23 artist portraits exhibited is its own self-contained world, specific to the artist’s mythology and methodology that inform and ultimately become their art.
Jason Schmidt graduated from Columbia University in 1991 with a degree in Art History. Many photographs from this body of work have been collected in Artists (2007) and Artists II (2015) published by Steidl. His work has been exhibited at Deitch Projects, New York; The Marguiles Collection, Miami; and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.
