Berlinde De Bruyckere: Khorós

Bozar presents a major solo exhibition of Belgian artist Berlinde De Bruyckere, marking her first large-scale presentation at the institution. Her work centres on humanity and the condition humaine, drawing from Christian iconography, classical mythology, Flemish masters and cultural traditions. These influences are reinterpreted within a contemporary framework, engaging with themes of violence, human suffering, and the enduring presence of beauty and hope.

In “Khorós”, De Bruyckere selects works spanning the past 25 years, placing them in dialogue with pieces by artists she calls her “compagnons de route.” The title, taken from the Greek word for the chorus in ancient tragedies, reflects the exhibition’s conception as an interplay of voices and shared narratives.

The presentation brings together De Bruyckere’s evocative sculptures and installations alongside works by Lucas Cranach the Elder, Peter Buggenhout, Patti Smith, and Pier Paolo Pasolini. This curatorial approach creates a layered conversation between past and present, personal and collective experience, and between distinct artistic languages. Through these exchanges, the exhibition invites reflection on fragility, resilience, and the universal search for meaning.
