Teodor Graur draws advantage from being stuck into the ”Romanian context”. What seemed to be a life sentence to regression turned into acute perception of the current dead-ends. Witness of the historical fractures of the past 50 years, he points to the clash of (visual) paradygms, from the abrupt, inter-war modernization, to the sheer antimodernism of the communist era, the perplexing re-modernity after 1989, and the ongoing revolutionary, global paravolution. His works, in a profusion of materials and techniques (installation, photography, video, painting, performance), incorporate much of the conflicting ideals of the European, occidental cultural identity.
