Kim Chong-Hak: Highlighting Contemporary Artist III
Busan Museum of Art keeps promoting artists at the center of contemporary Korean modern art scene with Kim Chong-Hak's exhibition
Busan Museum of Art presents the artist Kim Chong-Hak in the framework of “Highliting Contemporary Artist III”, the third exhibition held to spotlight on the artists who are positioned at the primary point of new departure, changes, and continuation in Korean art history.
Kim Chong-Hak is renowned for his works characterised by subjects of nature depicted in the most brilliant colours, but the artist’s early practice focused on avant-garde modernism. Chong-Hak became an active member of the modern art movement embracing abstract in the 1960s and approached figurative style only in 1970s after a series of works and experiences in Japan and in the US.
Returning to Korea in 1979, the artist retired in Seoraksan Mountain and since then he continued to experiment for over 40 years embracing the notion of “Sauisung” ( Freehand Brushwork) of the Korean tradition. The results are representational abstract-style paintings expressed in bright colours as elements of nature.
This exhibition takes an exhaustive look across Kim’s entire oeuvre, drawings and from his key works to his folk art collections.
