Anish Kapoor: Wounds & Absent Objects
Wounds & Absent Objects is the only video Anish Kapoor (b.) has made in his career to date.
The video will be shown for the first time in Cuba, and in the presence of the artist, at the Havana Art Biennial. The work is a tribute by Kapoor to another fine artist, Barnett Newman, one of the greatest exponents of American abstract expressionism. This video shares its title with a large series of paintings and sculptures that Kapoor produced between 1990 and 2000. The video should be projected on a big screen and in a very spacious place. The video consists of a monochrome colored back that prompts us to think of Newman’s paintings. The shade of the color progressively changes from bright to dark. This is the color’s amplification to infinity. The video is projected in a loop which allows us to see the slow metamorphosis from black to orange and then to blue and after that to vermillion red.The Payret movie theatre has an excellent atmosphere for the presentation of Kapoor’s video. One of the biggest movie theatres in the city, the Payret offers a great scale to present the video and it is an unusual place to present a work of video art, which gives this work an additional power. The shadowy ambience of the show room will be lightened for the projection and the colors that will flood the stalls. The first floor of the movie theatre will be empty; the audience will not have any access to it. Spectators can watch the video projection from the second floor.
