Aref Al Rayess

This major retrospective presents a largely unknown body of work created by the prolific Lebanese artist Aref El Rayess (1928–2005). The exhibition includes a wide range of paintings, drawings, works on paper, sculptures and tapestries that together reveal the rich and complex artistic practice of this important Arab modernist.

Sharjah Art Museum, Corniche street, Arts Area, Sharjah, UAE

The presentation follows a rough chronology, exploring several key moments in the development of his work: the years of training spent between Lebanon, Senegal and Paris; the abstract materialist works produced in Italy; the overtly political paintings inspired by the Algerian War of Independence; the liberation struggles of the ‘Third World’ and of African-Americans as well as the Lebanese War; and the deserts painted during his stay in Saudi Arabia.

Organised by Sharjah Art Foundation and Sharjah Museums Authority.
