Mounir Fatmi: Inside The Fire Circle

Lawrie Shabibi presents “Inside the Fire Circle”, a solo show by the artist Mounir Fatmi: dealing with the form of the circle, perfused by symbolical meanings across the centuries, the artist makes a connection between the life of the American activist for racial equality John Howard Griffin (1920 –1980), and the idea of the circular movement, seen as the tendency of history to repeat itself.
The exhibition takes its title from the new sculptural installation “Inside the Fire Circle”, referencing, as the others works of the show,  the circle: a recurring theme in Fatmi’s practice. On the other side, many of the works featured in the exhibition use images from the John Howard Griffin Archive, especially regarding on an experiment he made to turn his skin black, introducing the notion of crossing over into something else, recurring also in other of these works.
