Zimoun
The first solo exhibition in the Gulf of Swiss artist Zimoun takes place at New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) Art Gallery, the university’s academic museum-gallery. The artist usually builds immersive environments, exploring elements of biology, engineering, music, sound, and installation art. These surround viewers with visual and sound landscapes evoking both urban experience but also more visceral memories related with nature, like rain, sandstorms or wind.
For the occasion, he presents five immersive audio-visual installations, including a new room-size one commissioned for the occasion and which will be unveiled on the exhibition’s opening night. The so-constructed environments provide viewers with sensory experiences using analogue motors connected to common objects that produce sounds by their movement.
The exhibition is accompanied by some multi-channel compositions, on view in the Gallery’s reading room, from a record label project that Zimoun co-founded, named “Leerraum” (translated meaning ‘empty space’). It produces experimental music projects on CD, DVD, print and sound objects, with nearly 100 works from 50 international artists and designers, illustrating once more the immersive nature of Zimoun’s work.
