Black Flags

ZKM | Center for Art and Media, Lorenzstraße 19, 76135 Karlsruhe

The exhibition explores the multifaceted symbolism of the black flag through three selected works, each rich in aesthetic and political interpretations. The ambiguity of these pieces, displayed in ZKM’s atriums, encourages viewers to reconsider the elements that connect our society amidst present-day challenges. The exhibition envisions a future where ethical considerations are intertwined within a complex ecological system. Featured works include William Forsythe’s “Black Flags” (2014), a robotic choreography that transcends time and space; Santiago Sierra’s “Black Flag” (2015), a photographic and sound installation denouncing national symbols; and Edith Dekyndt’s “Ombre indigène, part 2, Martinique” (2014), a video that became a symbol of resistance against Iran’s mandatory hijab. These works collectively foster a reflection on societal unity and the evolving nature of culture.
