Sophie Calle: What Remains
One of the most comprehensive presentations in the last fifteen years in Germany by the French conceptual artist
The solo exhibition “What Remains“ gathers works by the French conceptual artist Sophie Calle from 1986 until the present, establishing a direct connection with the solo exhibitions at the Fotomuseum Winterthur and the Kunstmuseum Thun in Switzerland (2019).
Ranging between document and fiction, the pieces on show move from autobiographical and social experiences to highlight essential themes in Calle’s research, such as blindness, family relationships, love, loss, grief, and historical culture. Throughout her work, a special role is played by what is absent, investigating the fragility of memory and the power of imagination. Among the exhibition’s highlights, the series “Ma mère, mon chat, mon père et moi, dans cet ordre“ (My Mother, My Cat, My Father and Me, in That Order) (2012-2019), “Série Noire“ (2018), “Les Tombes“ (The Graves) (1990).
