4th Annual Collectors’ Contemporary Collaboration: Intimate Curiosity – Invitation to Japanese Collectors of Contemporary Art

Hong Kong Arts Centre, 2 Harbour Road, Wan Chai, Hong Kong

Celebrating its 4th edition in 2016, HKAC has invited Fumio Nanjo and Roger McDonald as the guest curators and turn our eyes on Japanese collectors, a group whose interest in art is not diverse, but also deep in focus. With this exhibition, CCC presents the diverse collections of Keita Arisawa, Daisuke Miyatsu, Yoshiko Mori, Takeo Obayashi, Atom Suematsu, Ryutaro Takahashi, Seiichi Yoshino, and shares with the audience the insight of Japanese contemporary collections.

Officiating guests included Ms Florence Hui, SBS, JP , Under Secretary for Home Affairs, Home Affairs Bureau, the Hong Kong S.A.R. Government; Mr Kuninori Matsuda, Ambassador & Consul-General, Consulate-General of Japan in Hong Kong; Mr Nelson Leong, Chairman, Board of Governors, Hong Kong Arts Centre; Mr Steven Lo, Managing Director, Global Market Manager, Citi Private Bank, Hong Kong; and Mr Kamsen Lau, Division Manager, Sogo Hong Kong Co. Ltd.; together with our featured collectors Yoshiko Mori, Takeo Obayashi, Keita Arisawa and participating artists including Yu Cheng-Ta and Kwan Sheung Chi.

The CCC series has been offering a precious opportunity for audiences to peer into private collections in different Asian countries and to enrich the understanding of art collecting and patronage. As for the 4th CCC exhibition this year, Guest Curators enrich the exhibition with different perspectives on the selection of the collectors as well as the exhibited art works. Four thematic headings are applied as guidelines in viewing the exhibition: “Mirrors of Reality”, “Dialogues with the Past”, “Identity Reawakened”, and “Shadows and Dreams”.

All the participating collectors in this Exhibition are the most representative Japanese contemporary art collectors, playing crucial roles in the development of the Japanese contemporary art scene not only because of their collection, but also through their committed effort in promoting and developing Japanese contemporary art.

Among all the art forms, photography also plays a particularly distinctive role in the development of Japanese contemporary art. The photography collections showcased in the exhibition will also offer audiences an opportunity to understand Japanese contemporary photography.
Art pieces by internationally renowned Japanese artists, including Yayoi Kusama, Takashi Murakami, Tatsuo Miyajima and some of the other famous artists will be featured in the exhibition, along with the Sino-Japanese husband-wife team of Rong Rong & Inri, who recently received the Outstanding Contribution to Photography prize at the 2016 Sony World Photography Awards.
