Animamix Biennale 2015-16

“The Animamix Biennale” has been held in Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou and Taipei since 2007, showcasing contemporary art under the influence of the unique aesthetics and culture of animation and comics. After their first participation in the biennale in 2013-14, the Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre and City University of Hong Kong will join hands again in 2015-16 to present an exhibition. Shanghai and Daegu, Korea will also participate in the event.

In animation and comics, the convergence of art, science, technology and storytelling continues to take place. Discussing the origin, tradition and contemporary practice of animamix, the biennale in 2015-16 takes the theme of “Directed Towards Knowledge” and connects various exhibitions of the participating cities.

With the broad curatorial vision, the Hong Kong exhibition, with the theme “POST PiXEL.”, investigates art in this “post-pixel” era. We are living in this partly real, partly virtual world constructed by tiny pixels with the advancement of technology. This smallest, basic unit of digital imaging gives rise to endless, unpredictable possibilities of art creation, breaking the boundaries of the traditional art forms, merging and extending new realms of knowledge.

Through this exhibition, artworks not only have significant artistic qualities but also test new ideas and experiences, and inspire viewers with new thoughts. Art can generate aesthetic experience and contribute to the generation of new knowledge as well as a new understanding of the intellectual sphere of the world, creating power at different levels.
