Katie Vajda: Body Domestic
On Saturday, 29 October 2016, AO Vertical Space presents Hong Kong-based visual artist and award winning photographer, Katie Vajda’s solo show, titled Body Domestic.
The exhibition works to detach the body from space, to unravel the fabric of our urban experience and then reconstruct it, referencing and subverting current visual culture. Vajda’s fine art practice blends photography, performance and keen observation to redefine and challenge where the human body fits within the current lived paradigm. Advised by noted curator and photographer Wong Kai Yu (Blues), the work will be presented in a large industrial stairwell, curated across 5 floors, inviting viewers on an interactive journey to experience a complex yet familiar narrative.
Vajda, winner of the prestigious Hong Kong Human Rights Arts Prize (2014), and most recently, the Hong Kong Arts Festival – Photography Campaign, Gold Award, is exhibiting 5 series of work – covering her career from 2013 to 2016 – with a mix of her most well-known images and new, never publicly shown projects, including Can you see me yet, The Body Domestic and Forgotten wild.
The opening reception (Friday, 28 October), hosted on the roof of the gallery and co-sponsored by Penfolds and Peroni, will feature a collaborative installation by internationally acclaimed Hong Kong sound artist, Fiona Lee, addressing the relationship between gravity, time intervals and space.
