Ocean Leung: A Response to An Intervention

Things that can happen presents A Response to An Intervention by Ocean Leung.

The intervention starts from Ocean’s daily wanderings through the district of Sham Shui Po. On these drifts, he listens for the utterances of the neighbourhood, documenting the markings etched into the disabled toilet of the local shopping mall, and follows the gutter water trickling down from Ki Lung Street’s eateries. Read as allegories for desire, survival and livelihood, Ocean scatters these images in the exhibition space, mimicking the streets of Sham Shui Po for visitors to view. He tempers with the materiality of the space, transforming its texture, consciously careless, causing emotional reactions with an intention to please. 

The response reflects on the act of intervening. Located in Sham Shui Po, a site undergoing disruptive and at times violent redevelopment, Ocean questions the intention of an intervention: how it relates to the lives of the communities, the economies, and lifestyles, and what it means to contribute to a relevant critical response. Built upon the first intervention, A Response features new and old works by Ocean.
