Perfecting the Present

J Plus Hotel by YOO showcases a joint photography exhibition by Hong Kong based celebrated photographers Pazu Chan and Michael Kistler.

Perfectly timed to Art Basel in Hong Kong 2016, J Plus Hotel by YOO will be launching its newest exhibition at its dedicated Art@JPlushk and throughout its lobby, featuring photographers Pazu Chan and Michael Kistler’s work. Located on the ground floor of the hotel, the newest exhibition is titled “Perfecting the Present”.

Hailing from Minneapolis, Michael Kistler’s distinct style injects a vintage stylistic quality to everyday encounters. Through his lens, the audience is invited to explore the ambiguity of the human element of cities through various urban vignettes. Each of Kistler’s pieces elevate mundane subjects such as a street crossing, to a playground floor, to a street full of traffic blurred by raindrops on the lens – signature to Kistler’s style of photography.

Kistler’s vision of the city is influenced by his extensive experience of photographing in different urban areas in Germany, Turkey, California, and Japan.

Humanising the inanimateness of Hong Kong is Pazu Chan’s collection of seven photographs which can be seen throughout J Plus Hotel by YOO’ lobby during the exhibition period.

Chan’s collection of photographs also tells the story of the beauty of the city, which is a story of the present but with traces of how the past contributed to it and how it will be passed along to the future.

Chan’s multimedia background allows him to think through art history, time, symbols, and space, which can be seen in “Perfecting the Present”. His haunting art has earned him accolades in the United States, China, and Hong Kong.
