Portals, Stories, and Other Journeys
A journey through Ha Bik Chuen's extraordinary archive and his artistic influences
“Portals, Stories, and Other Journeys“ assumes as starting point the late Hong Kong-based artist Ha Bik Chuen’s personal archive – itself an artwork – including a wide range of different objects: ephemera, negatives, contact sheets, and photo albums documenting exhibitions that he attended; illustrated magazines and book of collages; publications on art and visual culture.
The exhibition reveals the influence that Ha’s way of collecting and organizing has had on other artists, through ten “sets”: five of them consists of new commissions by artists Banu Cennetoğlu (Istanbul), Kwan Sheung Chi (Hong Kong), Lam Wing Sze (Hong Kong), Raqs Media Collective (New Delhi), and Walid Raad (Beirut/New York). The remaining ones imagine new contexts for documents and historical objects thanks to the research into Ha’s archive.
