Rasheed Araeen: Going East, Again
A comprehensive exhibition gathering Rasheed Araeen's works from his early career up to his latest researches
The exhibition “Going East, Again” at Rossi & Rossi art gallery, Hong Kong, is a comprehensive survey of Rasheen Araeen’s work, from his early portrait drawings to his most renowned geometrical sculptures. Mainly known for these minimalist pieces, Araeen also works across photography, performance, and painting, questioning Eurocentrism in the contemporary art scenario to bring to light artistic voices from Asia, Africa, and Caribbean regions. Over the last decade, the artist has increasingly researched the philosophical and intellectual developments of the classical Islamic world.
On display, the series of photos placed in the shape of Christian crosses on green backgrounds, the body of paintings “The Greatness of Islamic Civilization” (2011-2012), and a set of sculptures specially designed for the exhibition based on a 1966 drawing titled “Cube as Sculpture”, among the other works.
