Shahzia Sikander: Apparatus of Power

Apparatus of Power is the first major solo presentation of the work of Shahzia Sikander in Hong Kong. Installed within the Former Explosives Magazine Compound Asia Society Hong Kong Center, “Shahzia Sikander: Apparatus of Power” includes drawings on paper and large-scale animations. This body of work explores the colonial complexity in Hong Kong, both historical and current. Here, Sikander presents the signature visual vocabulary she has developed in her work spanning multiple media. The exhibition’s title refers to the potential of an image to communicate in multiple contexts, forms, and formats.

A selection of Sikander’s work engages the waterfront galleries of the Hong Kong Maritime Museum to echo the city’s cultural heritage from global maritime trade.

The exhibition is curated by Claire Brandon, Ph.D. Candidate at the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University with Ashley Nga-sai Wu of Asia Society Hong Kong Center as Assistant Curator.

The show is sponsored by AAN Foundation and presented in collaboration with the Hong Kong Maritime Museum, where new and extant works on paper, animations, and wall drawings will be shown from March 16 to July 9, 2016 at the Chantal Miller Gallery.

Extended Opening Hours during Art Basel Hong Kong:

March 21 – 27: 11am – 8pm
