am space shows “Sandwich Theory”, a solo exhibition by Hong Kong conceptual artist Wong Kit Yi , curated by Ali Wong. “Sandwich Theory” (all works 2016) is a series of “double-sided” works. Most are gongbi-style paintings on silk showing single or dual versions of a mischievous young girl depicted in the Northern Song Dynasty scroll Court Ladies Preparing Newly Woven Silk. Several others are loose, spontaneous form-and-color studies. Paired with each composition is a performance “score” painted on acrylic, in which the artist proposes to share a peculiar activity with whoever purchases the work. Only one side is visible at a time.
Ali Wong divides her time between being herself and the conceptual artist Wong Kit Yi.
