Yasumasa Morimura and Cindy Sherman: Masquerades
M+ presents an exhibition of photographic works by Yasumasa Morimura (Japan) and Cindy Sherman (USA), two internationally recognised artists who explore identity and representation through the use of masquerade. Both artists are known for transforming their appearances to create layered works that engage with cultural, historical, and social themes.
Part of the Pao-Watari Exhibition Series, Yasumasa Morimura and Cindy Sherman: Masquerades focuses on major early series by the two artists. These works reinterpret iconic images from art history, cinema, and media culture, offering both homage and critique. By adopting the visual language of their source material while imbuing it with personal context, the artists create representations that blur the boundaries between authenticity and artifice.
The exhibition invites viewers to reflect on the fluidity of identity and its construction through visual culture. Morimura and Sherman’s works evoke a sense of both familiarity and transformation, challenging perceptions of self and other, and highlighting the ways in which identity can be shaped, performed, and reimagined.
