Experimentum Crucis
In the former Cassonello barracks in Noto, Rosanna Musumeci curates the exhibition "Experimentum Crucis" where over thirty artists exhibit their artworks.
The exhibition takes its title “Experimentum Crucis” from the history of scientific knowledge, the experimentum crucis being in fact for Bacon and Newton the decisive test of the capacity of theories to explain an apparently heterogeneous cloud of phenomena, facts, and things. If this capacity is there, the theory is confirmed, it is true, otherwise, it is abandoned, declared false. A criterion of knowledge, therefore, is “objective”, of which the subject, Man, would be the detective. The world lies before us, and the task is to describe it in accordance with itself, discovering its laws of operation.
The exhibition is an artistic “experimentum crucis” where there is no world without the subject, without a creative act that conceptually postulates the physical object, analogous to the mythical conception of the Homeric gods. “Experimentum Crucis”, therefore, not on nature, as such unknowable, but on culture, which, by humanising it, creates the only accessible path to its knowledge. A path ideally congenial to the artist, since his language is not so much aimed at describing something as at expressing himself.
