Kei Imazu: The Sea is Barely Wrinkled

Museum MACAN (Modern and Contemporary Art in Nusantara), Jalan Panjang, Kebon Jeruk, West Jakarta City, Jakarta, Indonesia

Museum MACAN presents a solo exhibition by Japanese artist Kei Imazu, who is based in Bandung. The exhibition blends traditional artistic techniques with digital technologies to explore historical narratives and futuristic visions. Running from 24 May to 5 October 2025, it traces a “temporal map” linking Indonesia’s colonial past, contemporary ecological challenges, and local mythology.

Inspired by the 1628 shipwreck of the Batavia, the exhibition highlights enduring colonial legacies alongside urgent environmental concerns in Jakarta. Imazu foregrounds figures from Indonesian mythology, including Dewi Sri and Nyai Roro Kidul, offering counter-narratives to anthropocentric colonial paradigms. Through this approach, the artist blurs boundaries between history, myth, and fiction, inviting reflection on humanity’s entanglement with layered temporalities, natural environments, and the weight of historical memory.
