Alan Turner: I wanted to make things that were ordinary extraordinary

Sadie Coles | Bury Street, 8 Bury Street, London SW1Y 6AB, UK

Sadie Coles HQ presents a solo show of recently deceased American artist Alan Turner (1943-2020).

The exhibition features eight paintings dating 1986-1990, a fertile phase in the artist’s career during which he focused on the body as a doubly recognisable and reconfigurable entity. In these works, a fascination for fleshly naturalism combines with an affinity for the illogical and the aberrant.

Turner’s practice is “a form of realism”, influenced by Surrealism, showing displaced close-up views of body parts and where also titles are puns and wordplay.
